“There is, however, one serious matter that I must mention to you. The Soviet Government have expressed to us the view that the Germans in the desperation of their assault, may make use of poison gas against the armies and people of Russia. “We are ourselves firmly resolved not to use this odious weapon unless it is first used by the Germans. Knowing our Hun, however, we have not neglected to make preparations on a formidable scale.”

Winston Churchill. May, 1942.

THE CHURCHILL VETO

1942 - it's wartime Britain and Winston Churchill announces that preparations are underway against a possible German gas attack. Over the following years, a group of people work on a weapon for a secret government project, but each is unaware of its true purpose, believing it is a battlefield communications device. Nor do they know what parts others are assembling. Then, after a serious accident during testing reveals immense and hideous dangers, the project is cancelled and the assemblies are ordered destroyed by the Prime Minister - but one unit has unknowingly been stolen. This goes missing, only to surface some decades later. Those that come into contact with it develop alarming symptoms and a panic then ensues as the British government and secret service try to retrieve the deadly weapon to prevent a potential disaster for mankind. At the same time they find they are working against a foreign government who want it for more sinister reasons.

The Churchill Veto is a dramatic web of politics and espionage with every parents nightmare thrown in to the mix. The way the author crosses decades seamlessly and his knowledge of the technical without becoming geeky makes this a compelling read that I would recommend to friends and family alike. You will not be disappointed

Should be made into a movie, an excellent read much better than an Ian Fleming novel, more believable and very well written
